DisappointedDec 22, 2010
By Looker First, the unit is well built and looks substantial. I really just wanted Mobile DTV and not a DVD player, but what the heck, I'd get both, and for a nice price. I have to admit, I waited impatiently for mobile DTV to replace my old analog TV tuner used in my car since I enjoy listening to the evening news while driving. Although we have only one Mobile TV broadcaster in Tampa Bay, I thought I would give this unit a try. I first tried in in my home since I would also like to use it during power outages. Reception was very poor: I was only able to receive a signal after much fiddling with the antenna, and for some reason, the signal was only available in one location in the house. Strange, but I was not able to receive a signal outside of the house. I then tried using the unit in my vehicle (my wife driving of course) and was unable to receive any signal whatsoever, and this was driving towards the broadcaster's antenna system. Maybe I'm too far away from the broadcaster's antenna to receive a good signal, but in any event, it just did not work for me. I did contact the broadcaster and they actually experimented with this unit as well as an LG cell phone. To their surprise, they too had poor results with this unit but had excellent results with the LG phone. If you decide to purchase this unit, ensure that you receive Mobile DTV signals and that you have the ability to return the product if it does not meed your expectations. I understand there is a USB adapter for a laptop that does the same thing but haven't tried that one yet, plus other companies are coming out with Mobile DTV handheld TVs soon.

Too Much Hype, Too Little RealityJan 03, 2011

The good news is the LG DP570MH worked out of the box and had a nice heft to it. Even DVD's played nicely - and in good clear weather I could pick up a fair Mobile DTV station about one hundred miles away. Recently in my area, we had two MDTV stations go on the air that I managed to pick up. But the good news ends there. First off, there is no ATSC tuner built in, meaning one is limited to MDTV signals or nothing - zip. Second, the two local signals would pop in or out. Certainly no where near the claims that a signal could be picked up in a moving car. Another problem is the antenna offers no coax port to hook an external antenna up - wish I knew that before I bought it. I was one of those suckers who plunked down the initial $250 for it. $99 is better, but all you'd still have is a glorified DVD player. Granted, MDTV is a very new technology, but it should have featured a dual ATSC / MDTV tuner to make it more useful. Also, one needs to have the remote control to access all features and set-up of the set. Putting the battery in the remote is a pain also, and you end up having to use a harder to find 'watch-type' battery instead of 'easier to find' `AAA' batteries. For now, I really cannot recommend the set due to the issues above - and after the warranty expires, I plan to burn a hole in the side of the set and add a coax connector like my standard 7" LCD Widescreens. My advice for anyone who buys the LG DP570MH tv set is to leave the antenna out along the side rather than putting it back to the inner pocket - because if the odd piece at the end of the 'hair-like' antenna breaks off (and it will) with frequent use, you're out of luck! Good try LG, but you didn't quite get it right!

MOBILE DTVApr 20, 2011
By GreenCacher I bought this primarily because it is the only available device with a screen that receives the new Mobile DTV standard. After reading the reviews I was not sure what to expect. In the Orlando area, we can receive an ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliate. Reception is good, even when moving. There are some issues receiving our NBC affiliate because it is still broadcasting in VHF. It does not receive the standard DTV, but this is not a problem as you are most likely going to use this player in a moving car. As for playing DVDs, it works fine as a portable DVD player. The battery life is excellent--I had it on for about 4 hours in both TV and DVD mode. It has surprisingly good speakers, which instead of being in the screen are on the front of the base. They sound clear even at fairly high volume. There are a few bonuses, such as the ability to play music files and view pictures from a USB stick, and the player has video out. The only major complaint I have is the quality of the screen. It is very low resolution, so the pixels are large and very visible. I would have expected more from a name brand device, but as it is I once had a generic store-brand portable DVD player with a higher resolution, better quality screen.
Overall, I would recommend purchasing it if you mainly want to use it to receive Mobile DTV, especially if you want to use it on car trips.

Mobile TVFeb 02, 2011
By SGlenn I ordered three of these from Amazon and partners, none of which worked out of the box. We have two stations "on" the mobile TV band, and they were not picked up by these units. When I called LG they suggested either returning them to the seller (I did that twice) or sending in to LG for refurbishing (I sent the same unit in twice).
If I had not gone to the TV station and sat down with the head engineer and seen his unit working, I would have assumed there was an issue with the transmitter, but when you think about a multi-million dollar operation pitching this "new" technology, and what they spent on a transmitter, versus a one hundred dollar receiver, I guess the obvious answer is the receiver was off kilter.
Because of my persistence, and because I finally got a call from the refurb department asking what was going on, the last time it was shipped to me, it worked. That is a 20% success rate.
Now that it is working, and has a rock solid signal and it is indispensable to my wife, who put up with the superbly lousy new "improved" HDTV signal/ portable TV in the bathroom that fluctuated with every move she made while getting ready for work. We also have a unit we can take to the basement during tornado season that we have a reasonable assurance will stay lit during emergencies.
It is a wonderful unit now, but no one should have to take five chances to get a unit that works.

LG DP570MH ReceiverNov 15, 2010
By Bob In Charlotte An excellent unit if you live in an area where ATSC M/H is being transmitted. Be sure to check to see if M/H is available in your area before purchase, as this unit will NOT receive the legacy ATSC broadcasts that a normal HDTV will.
