5I Also DisagreeApr 16, 2012

The older the coin the more it is worth pretty much. That is not ALWAYS the case, though. If the coins have been stored properly. Not handled or been stored in an area where people consistently smoke. The coin will gain value no matter what the current melt value is. With a lot of these coins they end up getting scratches so private mints will just melt them down to make their 1-1000 oz silver bars. People will lose them. Some will get a lot of scratches so people will sell them for melt value. So pretty much...you are paying for the rarity, and the person/companies ability to keep that coin in the condition it was received in many years ago. I have a 2001 Silver Eagle that actually looks better than most of the 2012 silver eagles I received in my box of 500 Silver Eagles. I am asking almost double melt value because that is a very rare find. Also, most gorgeous looking old coins have been sent out to be graded so they are involved in that market. Those prices have an even higher premium. If you plan to invest/buy silver without caring what it looks like just search for 1 oz silver bars or coins of silver on here. You will most likely find lots where they say the bars or coins are not in great condition so they will be selling them for around melt value. Obviously a little higher than melt value to factor in the free that Amazon takes and the shipping fees from Amazon. The good deals are out there. You just need to search for them.

I agree with the other reviewer. BUT! I also respectably disagree. You are not buying silver at "melt Value" that is where many silver prices come from and vary day to day. I am not a seller for this item let's make that clear. I am a collector. I agree to shop around. These started to be produced in 1986. So the earlier ones are going to be more expensive. I also look at this as an investment. So it is a collectable investment. It is also important to store these coins in airtight capsules. Or use an New intercept Shield American Eagle Silver Dollar Album. This album is expensive but it seals the coin in a book like structure. The coin is easily viewable and it is high quality storage. Plus you can keep it in your home without fear of theft as the New Intercept Shield American Eagle Silver Dollar Album appears to be like any book on your shelf. Most thieves want to get in and out in 7 minutes. I feel these coins are a easy investment and I just started coin collecting as I recently was granted disability status. Believe me retirement consists mostly of boredom. So I am collecting these and other American Silver dollars are something to pass to my children when I am gone. I only wish i stated this "hobby" when I was young. As my step father tried to get me to do. Ah the ignorance of youth. A sound investment and I fear a time may come when these may be used as a barter system. They are available now, get started. I pay no more than $50.00 per coin and often less. I bought 2 of these (2011) They already doubled in value! Maybe it's for you maybe not, but silver has increased in value 185% in 5 years. Good collecting! And why not start here on amazon where good value and good service meet!

Way too much, its almost thirty dollars over the market price for silver. Silver right now is 40 dollars an ounce; i suggest anyone looking to buy silver check the market price for silver before you do.
